Sep. 28th, 2008 @ 11:59 pm The cWo's Top 25 Comedy Movies, Part 1(#25-21)
It's here! The list you've all been waiting for is ready and the first part is up right now. This week we've got a bunch of idiots and slackers getting into misadventures. I could be talking about any movie. Is your favorite among these? Go behind the cut and find out!

#25: Office Space(1999)

Work Sucks.

Points: 54

Highest Rank: #4 by trustthesource

Starring: Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston, David Herman, Ajay Naidu, Diedrich Bader, Gary Cole, Stephen Root

Story: A group of slackers who hate their jobs come up with a plan to steal money, which quickly backfires and threatens to put them all in federal "pound-me-in-the-ass" prison.

Ahh, Office Space. A movie where nothing and yet a lot of things happen at the same time. I've never had a job at a cubicle (I'm still in college) but from what I hear this movie gets it right. It's the little things and little jokes that over time, build up and lead to bigger jokes. The movie itself has a ton of memorable characters. Whether it's the everyman Peter, his neighbor Lawerence, the quiet Milton or the dickhead boss Lumburgh. He makes Peter work on a Saturday, man! This movie still gets constant airplay on stations like Comedy Central, and is quite the favorite of many people I know. Mike Judge would next make Idiocracy, but it's better to ignore that and remember the highlights of Office Space.

The following clip is my favorite song from the soundtrack, and you should know what I'm talking about. How satisfying would it be, for anyone who has been in this type of work or can imagine what this type of work is like, to do what Peter Gibbons does in this clip?

"PC load letter? What the fuck does that mean?!

#24: Clerks(1994)

Just because they serve you doesn't mean they like you.

Points: 56

Highest Rank: #3 by thebrood138

Starring: Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Lisa Spoonhauer, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith

Story: There really isn't a story. It's a day in the life of two slackers working in a convenience store.

If you don't know what it's like living in a cubicle, you may be able to relate more to these two. I know I certainly can. Working in a store like the Quick Stop sucks, and Kevin Smith pulls no punches in showing why. Yes, Clerks is the movie, that for better or worse, gave the world Kevin Smith. Some do not like him, a lot of people do, but if you haven't seen this movie you are in no place to judge. Essentially a series of conversations with some extracurricular activities mixed in, it's a series of funny and true-to-life conversations that many of us likely get into on a regular basis. There are many quotable lines and many great scenes. It's a very real movie. The best part about it, is that nothing is resolved at the end of the film. It's just a look into the lives of two people who are stuck in a dead end job. A very funny look.

"This job would be great if it wasn't for the fucking customers."

#23: Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure(1989)

History is about to be rewritten by two guys who can't spell.

Points: 58

Highest Rank: #6 by disq0duck

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, George Carlin

Story: While trying to write a history report, Bill & Ted come across a time machine that allows them to meet up with history's greatest. And ruin everything.

Of course, this is what gave the world Keanu Reeves. However, you probably wouldn't have guessed that from the way he played a complete idiot in this movie. Bill & Ted were to the eighties what Cheech and Chong were to the seventies. A couple of idiots who get into misadventures. But who didn't love the adventures of Theodore Logan and William S. Preston, Esquire? The Wyld Stallyns were most triumphant and very excellent. A notable mention goes to the late great George Carlin as Rufus, who actually plays the straight man to the duo. On their "excellent adventure" they meet up with Socrates, Abraham Lincoln and others, all in hilarious fashion.

"Want a Twinkie, Genghis Khan?"

#22: National Lampoon's Vacation(1983)

Every summer Chevy Chase takes his family on a litle trip. This year he went too far.

Points: 58.5

Highest Rank: #8 by NT3

Starring: Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, Dana Barron, Randy Quaid, Imogene Coca

Story: The Griswold's, lead by their father who wants to spend more time with his family, go out on a trip to "Walley World" that takes them across America.

These days, it seems like the "road trip" comedy is played out. While there may have been some before it, no comedy did the road trip genre better than National Lampoon's Vacation. Remember when Chevy Chase meant something to the comedy world? For that matter, remember when National Lampoon meant something to the comedy world? It can be argued that these films were when they were both at their respective bests. It's one of those movies that also can still be found on cable if you look for it, and it's considered the best of the National Lampoon "Vacation" movies. Chevy Chase is really funny here, playing Clark Griswold as a clueless yet well-meaning father, who is forcing his family to spend time with him. Of course, like any road trip movie, it doesn't take them long to get into trouble. Check it out.

"Hey, hey, easy kids. Everybody in the car. Boat leaves in two minutes... or perhaps you don't want to see the second largest ball of twine on the face of the earth, which is only four short hours away?"

#21: Dumb and Dumber(1994)

For Harry and Lloyd, every day is a no-brainer.

Points: 59

Highest Rank: #3 by R8DRsuperstar

Starring: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Lauren Holly, Mike Starr, Karen Duffy, Charles Rocket

Story: Harry and Lloyd get involved in a dangerous situation when Lloyd wants to give a briefcase back to the girl of his dreams, who is not what she seems.

Speaking of road trip comedies...over a decade later and the Farrelly Brothers give us this gem. This movie effectively launched the career of Jim Carrey, who teams up with Jeff Daniels to play Harry and Lloyd. Harry and Lloyd are so stupid they make Bill & Ted look like geniuses. These guys are just really dumb, but with all idiots in the genre, they're also very lovable. They're also really funny. That seems to be something comedies these days are lacking. They give us stupid people, but they seem to lack the heart. The best moments are when it appears that one of the two will have a moment of clarity and say something smart, but then they completely ruin the moment. I haven't seen this movie in years, but writing about it makes me want to give it another look. Thanks, cWo!

"Just when I think you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this…and totally redeem yourself!"

Tomorrow night, at midnight, you will get Part two. There will be some more lovable goofs, some partying and more.

I'll be the FIRST one to confess to being a moron. I forgot both Office Space and Clerks. At least I remembered Bill & Ted, which is indeed quite excellent.

No Kevin Smith movies from me and I've only seen Office Space once all the way through. The fact that I forgot Bill S. Preston & Ted "Theodore" Logan is so heinous.

Office Space came in at #12 on my list.

I can't believe I forgot Clerks. I knew when I sent in that list something just wasn't right about it.

Never really cared for Bill and Ted.

National Lampoon's Vacation just barely missed making my list.

Dumb and Dumber is on the same boat as Vacation, just missed the final cut.

Office Space WAS #25 on my list, but I changed it at the last second.

Clerks was #3 on my list as stated above.

Bill and Ted was #11, and the other 2 didn't rate. Vacation took a back seat to a couple of other Lampoon films. While I really don't care for Dumb & Dumber at all. I don't HATE it, it's just not my thing.

It physically hurt me to pot Lampoon over Bill and Ted as both might've made my Top 25, but that's why I can't make lists in a week.

Not really shocked Office Space didn't rank higher, and I've never really thought much of it either, but I'm too far into Dilbert to see office humor other places.

Never really cared for Dumb and Dumber, but I've never been a huge Carrey guy anyway.

X-Files Week 4: "Conduit"

(Permanent Link)
Just finished up "Conduit." This was definitely a more character-driven episode than "Squeeze." It wasn't really the actual "X File" that was important, it was Mulder's reaction to it and how he was dealing with the loss of his sister. I barely remembered a thing about this episode except the part with the girl's face that Scully sees near the end. My theory was already blown after three episodes. I didn't think Scully ever reported to any superiors until the appearance of Skinner in "Tooms", however here she is talking to Section Chief Blevins not even three minutes in. She's supposed to talk Mulder out of pursuing this case yet the reason they end up going is still kind of weak; the lady saw a UFO when she was a girl scout.

Not a bad episode, as it reminds me of the recent X-Files movie. The story itself is in the background, as the focus is more on the lives of Mulder and Scully. I usually prefer my episodes to involve monsters and such (like "Squeeze") but sometimes the personal stories can be good too. My grade is a B.

I think of Office Space as a great movie, but not a great comedy, if that makes sense. And to me Clerks is good for what it is, but it's not top 25 overall...

I had Dumb and Dumber somewhere in the top 25, because if it's on, I'll watch it, but I don't remember where. And I've gotta assume that Slap Shot isn't going to make the cut even though Newman just died. Uzbek assholes!

List Stuff

(Permanent Link)
Office Space JUST missed the list in my last round of cuts. I like it a lot, but I'm not absolutely in love with it as some seem to be. Maybe it's because I've never worked in that setting.

Clerks was my #25. I thought it was fucking hilarious, but there were just 24 comedies I enjoyed more. In a related note, Mallrats just BARELY missed the list, and yes I know most people hate it but I don't care. Jason Lee is hysterical as comic-book geek Brody.

Bill & Ted was my number 15. I actually almost bumped it at the last minute and replaced it with Bogus Journey which is the one I enjoy more as a movie, but I decided against it as the first one is funnier and a better straight comedy overall. My theory is that I liked the second one better in total because of all the horror overtones, great performance by Bill Sadler as Death, and some moments in Hell I actually found genuinely unnerving. As a comedy though, the first one wins.

NL's Vacation was my #19, and is far and away the best family road-trip movie ever and the best of the "Vacation" series. I also think it's the funniest film ever to star Chevy Chase, although I haven't seen Fletch yet which most seem to love. I considered including Christmas Vacation too, which I've always had a soft spot for, but after a recent re-watch, it doesn't quite hold up as well as I hoped. European is decently funny in spots also, but from what I've seen of Vegas it looks like utter crap.

As noted above D&D was my #3, and to this day is still one of my favorite comedies to watch again and again. There are so many great bits here:

"You gave my dead bird to a blind kid?!"

"Want to hear the most annoying sound in the world? AAAAHHHHHHHH!"

"I got robbed by a little old lady on a motorized cart, and I DIDN'T EVEN SEE IT COMING!"

The funniest toilet scene in film history with Harry and the laxatives.

The part where they feed the bad guy poison instead of his ulcer pills by accident.

"I desperately want to make love to a school boy."

"Woah! Look at the butt on that." "Yeah, he must work out."

The entire ski trip montage with Harry and Mary and then Lloyd's road fantasy with Mary's "head lights" and the Mortal Kombat fatality.

"Mary, what are the chances of a guy like you and a girl like me, ending up together?" "I'd say about one in a billion Lloyd." "So... you're saying that there's a chance!" And probably about a hundred other things I'm not remembering right now.

"WE LANDED ON THE MOON!"

I forgot Bill & Ted's, but I'm not sure it would have made my list anyway. It would have been in the 20's, so no biggie for me. Plus, if I'd added it, it would have passed Vacation, which is not cool.

Office Space was low on my list, #24 I think. Honestly, it was one of those "I need to fill in spots" picks.

Vacation was #16 for me, Dumb & Dumber was #7 and Clerks wasn't going to get anywhere NEAR my list.

I don't even have a problem with Kevin Smith, so much as Kevin Smith fanboys, and Clerks suffers the worst fate for me. The first time I saw it, I thought it wasn't bad, but the acting was terrible. Now, thanks to people slurping it, I hate the freakin' thing. As for the acting, it's so bad it's hard to enjoy the stuff. The clip above, when dude is talking about the death star, it's as if he's reading from a cue card that is just off camera. It's so bad. I'd rather have Mallrats or Dogma if we're gonna get a Kevin Smith movie on the list.

Well, the Tigers have layed down all year, why stop now? Plus, even when they were good the last 2 seasons, the Sox are the team that always pummeled them.

So of course that means Detroit is bound to win, 9-6.

I'd LOVE to see the Cubs finally win the Series, so they're my pick of who I WANT to win, and screw it, my pick to win it all.

Kurt Angle on returning to the WWE: "If I did go back, which is a very slim chance, my schedule would be a lot less. I just can't do it, I've wrestled twenty two years in amateur wrestling and eight as a pro. It just won't happen."

His feelings on Shawn Michaels and Triple H: "My anger has passed. I don't blame Shawn or Triple H for what I went through. When it was time for me to get help, instead of shouting out I kept my mouth shut., Trip and HBK are two of the best wrestlers who ever lived. I harbour no animosity towards them. McMahon is a billionaire who wishes he had a gold medal in the Olympics. I may not have the money, but I am a valuable commodity. He knows, and I know."

His feelings on Vince McMahon: "He is the smartest, most intelligent, and most successful promoter of all time. Him and I have had our ins and outs, and it's almost come to blows, but Vince and I have a mutual respect for each other. I know how good he he is at what he does, and he knows how good I am. No-one can break that bond, not Jeff Jarrett, not Dixie Carter. It's like a father-son bond."

(Permanent Link)
-The buyrate for UFC 87 (which featured Lesnar/Herring and St. Pierre/Fitch) was an estimated 625,000, the second highest this year behind Breaking Point (650,000) whose big sell was the UFC debut of Lesnar. This is a telltale in ways that the prediction of over 1 million buys for Lesnar/Couture is very much in reach, making it the highest bought MMA PPV of all-time, possibly breaking through some of the highly ranked boxing events over the years.

-Warner Bros. FINALLY announced that "The Dark Knight" will come out on DVD and Blu Ray December 9th close to two weeks after Black Friday. Expect much madness.

-White Sox and Tigers are tied 1-1 going into the 6th inning. THE TIGERS ARE IN THE POSTSEASON!!! (sorta...)

-And Chris Rock's newest HBO standup special premiered last weekend. Not as good as the legendary first two, but still insanely funny at times. A definite thumbs up.

I like how Dream Theater usually doesn't double up on their live albums, except for some songs like "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" when they did the whole song on Score, then had a few parts on the Budokan DVD (same with Scenes From a Memory songs.) So I'm hoping that the next DVD has "Misunderstood", "Take Away My Pain" and "Prophets of War." I need to hear those live.

Speaking of comedies about offices...

(Permanent Link)
Boy fucking howdy is "The Office" still shitty. I was ready to call season four a one-off bomb, but the premiere last Thursday was quite terrible. They still achieve humor - on a much more scattershot and derivative basis - but they've lost any ambition toward building compelling characters. Jim and Pam are boring and everyone else is a zany eccentric. The weird and mean-spirited moments of this show were so funny because they contrasted its real and good-hearted norm so sharply. It's no fun when everyone's always weird and mean-sprited.

For the life of me, I don't understand the "special enforcer" thing. That is not going to sell tickets/buys. It works with non-wrestlers, but Foley? On the biggest show of the year? TNA seemingly has no reservations about turning guys at a moments notice, why not do Foley/Abyss. Abyss beats him down continually, wins the first couple of matches, then Foley returns as Cactus. Pretty easy. How he doesn't have a match is beyond stupid.
